Do you want to stay electrically safe this summer? Throughout the month of June, we have been sharing some electrical safety tips we find important during the summertime on our Facebook Page. These tips range from outdoor safety to how to save energy in your home.
Here are some of the most important tips we think you should follow this summer to keep yourself and your family safe:
OUTDOOR ELECTRICAL:
+ Iowa One Call is a service that allows you and others to stay safe when planning to dig. One Call will make sure you are safe from electrocution. Call 1-800-292-8989.
+ A generator is a temporary power source. Use a generator only when necessary to power essential equipment or appliances.
+ Do not touch anything that is in contact with the electrical line.
+ Keep all outdoor receptacles dry and away from water.
SAFETY FOR THE KIDS:
+ Do your chargers or vacuum not fit snugly into your electrical outlets? Loose fitting plugs can cause overheating or fires.
+ During storms, get indoors as soon as possible. Although tornado watching could be cool, staying away from falling electrical lines and sparking boxes are imperative for your child’s safety.
+ Never climb trees near power lines, trees can be electrically charged and cause significant damage.
CLEANING UP AT HOME:
+ Use extreme caution when cutting or drilling into walls where electrical wires or water pipes could be accidentally touched or penetrated.
+ Replace flickering/dim light bulbs: finding the correct voltage of light bulb is important and bad bulbs can cause problems in the future.
SAVING ENERGY:
+ Never attempt a project that is beyond your skill level. Knowing when to call a professional may help prevent electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities.
+ Close the blinds and check your seals- this maintenance could save you lots of money when cool air is escaping out of cracks.
+ Reduce energy flow by staying off technology and enjoying nature.
