In the summertime, the heat goes up, the AC gets turned down, the kids hit the pool, and it’s time to kick back and relax by the barbeque. Summertime in the Midwest is a glorious time.
But it’s also important to remember that this season brings along a host of changes for your home, business, or farm’s electrical needs that you need to be on the lookout for.
Here is our list of summertime electrical safety tips at McAllister Electrical Services:
Don’t touch electrical toys or appliances when wet.
In the summertime, we in the Midwest love to cool down by relaxing near or in the water.
From swimming pools to boating on the river, we are frequently exposed to electrical outlets and small tools that use electricity to operate.
If you are in the water or if your body is wet or damp from your most recent dip in the pool, do NOT touch any electrical outlets. Wait until you are fully dry so to avoid the risk of electric shock.
Water conducts electricity very quickly, so it is especially important during these summer months to be wary of water presence when plugging in or unplugging.
Read the owner’s manual for your power tools.
Summer for many of us is a chance to tackle those projects we’ve been unable to get at during the colder months. So we break out the pressure washers, wet/dry vacuums, nail guns, etc. to make these projects a little easier.
We at McAllister Electrical Services want you to be sure you’re using these tools safely and correctly, so be sure to read the owner’s manuals to avoid things like an electric shock. Also, be sure to watch for cracks and breaks in the handles and/or power cords to keep you and your family safe.
Make sure your equipment has the UL label indicating that it is listed by a recognized testing laboratory.
When using power tools, window air conditioning units, or fans this summer, make sure these items have UL labels or other factory-markings that prove they have passed safety testing at a factory.

For our last summer safety tip this week, we draw from our friends at the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI):
“Docks and boats carry sources of electricity. Faulty wiring or the use of damaged electrical cords and other devices can cause the surrounding water to become energized. NEVER swim near a marina or near a boat while it’s running.”
